"In the Christian worldview, what we regard as “impersonal forces” are not the real story, but rather the letters and punctuation marks with which its told. The universe is deeply personal, not in some confused pantheistic way, but because it has all been made by the Person of God. Thus science, history, and every other pursuit of the mind are not acts of discovery, but rather of communication – with someone on the other end of the line ... The personal nature of the universe that should drive us toward doing scholarship rigorously and carefully. It gives us hope that things will indeed make sense, because we as rational creatures are dealing with the work of a rational Creator ... What’s more, it doesn’t just mean knowledge can be rightly understood, but it must. By their nature, ethical norms cannot exist outside of relationship. I am morally obliged by the act of communication to try to understand what the other person is trying to say, whether it’s a friend speaking English or God speaking math."

That death is not simply an invasion into the natural world after the fall but is inherent to the natural world because the natural world is mortal and only God is immortal. God wrote death into the fabric of things because all created things are mortal ... What takes on immortality are those who choose the Tree of Life."

Eindelijk op de InternetMonk-website: de lang door de redacteuren beloofde discussie over Robert Farrar Capon's Between Noon and Three (het boek over aanstootgevende genade waar ik het ook al eens over heb gehad): "As much as we like to talk about grace, we really don’t see it and believe it in all its fullness. Mostly, we come to God with as many moral assets as we can muster and hope grace will cover the rest. In our dealings with other people, we usually only deal a backward grace. If we meet someone who used to be caught in sin, but has since experienced a deliverance, we marvel at the strength and beauty of God’s grace, but we hardly believe it is for the person who is currently caught ... When we realize we are “in a love affair with an unlosable lover”, the performing stops."

"If you've never said about what you've discovered in Christ, "This can't be true…Nothing is that good!" and if everybody to whom you witness doesn't say, "You're making that up!" then it's probably not the Gospel. Religion, policemen who give tickets for bad behavior, scary calls to obedience ("God's going to break your legs!"), and justice for screwing up…none of that is surprising ... Grace always is."

"I know who you are. But I love you anyway."
