"I will admit that meditating on the Hubble photos plays havoc with my understanding of theology. The Bible was written in a pre-scientific culture. Despite the valiant attempts of my Creationist friends to rescue the Bible as a book of literal science, I increasingly see that the Bible delivers its story to us in the language of people who simply could not have fathomed what Hubble is showing us." "I realize that the heart of reality, however, is not the depth and beauties of space. The heart of reality is the God revealed in Jesus. The story of the Prodigal Son takes me deeper into God’s universe than any telescope or space probe. The cross and resurrection show me more of the essence of reality than can be seen in the information gathered by any ingenious human instrument."

"That seems abstract so here is an example from my own life. Am I a good father? I think that question is a trap. If I say I'm a good father I've likely blinded myself to areas where I need improvement. By contrast, if I think I'm a bad father I start moving in more morbid and neurotic directions. What I try to do instead is just keep focusing on being a father. I keep reminding myself about what all that entails and move in that direction. The key is to keep this about the present moment. Self-esteem is generally past-oriented--"Have I, in the past, been a good or bad father?" In an very important sense, that question doesn't matter. And trying to get an answer to that question is really distracting you from being a father RIGHT NOW. Just be a father and stop ruminating."

"The issue isn't really about gender, about if God has a "masculine" or "feminine" feel. The issue is about the use of power within the Kingdom. The discussion about gender is really just a cover for a powerplay, about who is in charge and who gets to call the shots. And as we've seen, Jesus is absolutely hostile to this sort of thing. When this sort of thing is going on in the Kingdom Jesus will be bringing the sword." "There should be no peace in this instance, only conflict with the power structure.  Jesus completely undermines the powerplay. Power in the Kingdom is not "lording over" people, with some giving orders and others obeying orders. That's the way the world works. And if you see that sort of stuff going on in a church you're witnessing heresy. Christians don't give orders to Christians. The Christian way is the cross. The greatest amongst us are the servants. The preeminent amongst us are the ones washing feet. We seek to serve rather than be served. That's how power looks in the Kingdom of God."

"Haidt argues that people are fundamentally intuitive, not rational. If you want to persuade others, you have to appeal to their sentiments."
