Een nieuwe trailer voor Snow White and the Huntsman, waarin het sprookje een deel van zijn duistere lading terugkrijgt. Deze trailer voor Prometheus is ook wel heel spannend. Een beetje eng, maar ik denk dat ik hem toch maar ga kijken - dat ik erna niet kan slapen neem ik maar voor lief.
Dit filmpje speelt zich af in een omgeving waar ik vroeger veel over fantaseerde (en die als locatie diende in meerdere van mijn verhalen): een door de natuur overwoekerde stad. Prachtig in beeld gebracht.
Interessante gedachten op wetenschapswebsite New Scientist: "Children are born primed to see god at work all around them and don't need to be indoctrinated to believe in him ... Religion is deeply etched in human nature and cannot be dismissed as a product of ignorance, indoctrination or stupidity. Until secularists recognise that, they are fighting a losing battle."
John Shore wordt gevraagd waarom hij gelooft. Hij antwoordt dat het geloof in Jezus voor hem 'werkt'. Hij suggereert dat geloof context geeft: het is een verhaal dat betekenis geeft aan onze omgeving en onszelf. En als mensen kunnen we niet anders dan onszelf deze verhalen vertellen. "To be alive is to actively and constantly choose a belief system; no one, no matter how “free” they may think their mind is, exists outside of such a system. The human mind must, and will, establish patterns—which is to say contexts—for virtually everything of which it can conceive. The Muslim’s belief system/life context is Islam. For Jews, it’s Judaism; for Buddhists, Buddhism; for atheists, it’s nothing beyond that for which there is empirical evidence, and so on. By the very nature of our design we all filter the world, and our experience within it, through a belief system founded upon what we believe to be true, right, and good." De zoektocht is naar het beste verhaal, en dat is het verhaal dat het meest lijkt op het Verhaal dat deze werkelijkheid IS.
Op Internetmonk een hilarisch satirisch artikel dat beschrijft hoe de relatie tussen Jezus en zijn discipelen zou zijn geweest als hij had geleken op de kerkleiders van tegenwoordig. Het hele stuk is de moeite waard, hier is een citaat: "Jesus ended this first staff meeting with a prayer. “Father, help us change the world. There are people out there who are hurting, wounded and in need of you. Guide our ministry so we can impact the world with your good news. I pray that people come to our service this week. That you’d be preparing their hearts, even now, to come to our new building. I pray that they would become tithing disciples who give to us so we can fulfill the ministry you have given to us. May you expand our territory so we can impact this evil culture for you.” Ouch ...
Een interview van Skye Jethani met Jim Gilmore. De laatste schreef een boek over manieren om bedrijven te laten groeien - maar merkte dat deze methode ook door kerken wordt toegepast. Maar kerken zijn geen bedrijven! "The church is to stand apart from the marketplace. The church is not a business; she should sell no economic offerings. In an age when more and more of life is being commodified — we are going beyond just the buying and selling of goods and services and now charging for life experiences and personal transformations — the church needs to refrain from participating in this activity. Just because experiences and transformations “sounds like what we do,” as one pastor once told me, that is not a reason to abandon the very limited role for the organized church as prescribed in scripture. The church should not number itself among other worldly enterprises, performing roles properly assigned to other institutions. Instead, the church should be the place where individuals are equipped for when they go forth in their daily pursuits." Hij raadt mensen bovendien aan Kingdom, Grace, Judgement van Robert Farrar Capon te lezen - wat ik ook van harte kan aanbevelen. Het commentaar van Luther op Galaten, dat hij ook aanbeveelt, ligt al bij mij in de kast op lezing te wachten.
Richard Beck op Experimental Theology pleit voor een herwaardering van het boek Prediker - een bijbelboek dat vaak wordt neergezet als neerslachtig, of somber, en waar de uitleg aan wordt gegeven als zou het een beschrijving zijn van het leven van een ongelovige, of iemand zonder God. Ik besefte echter na mijn eigen overspannenheid dat Prediker nu juist het leven beschrijft van een gelovige, die inziet dat al zijn menselijke inspanningen om betekenis te vinden zinloos zijn en dat hij vrij is om te genieten van het leven dat hij leidt en goed te doen. "I'd like to suggest that Ecclesiastes is a great treatise on exorcism. Perhaps the most powerful exorcist text in the bible. Many think Ecclesiastes is depressing. Only if you're demon possessed! For the great task of Ecclesiastes is to expose the dynamic at work behind service to the powers, the pursuit of meaning and self-esteem through the cultural hero system. Who is Oz, the force behind the curtain pulling the levers of achievement, reputation, significance, and self-esteem? What Ecclesiastes shows us, in pulling back the curtain, is that death is the force in the background driving the show." Uiteindelijk beschrijft Prediker een positief beeld van het leven waaruit deze machten zijn uitgedreven. "The vision of the person who as stepped away from idolatry, who has been exorcised of the spirituality of the principalities and powers. Non-anxious. Peaceful, internally and externally. Relaxed in the face of death. Not lured into crazy self-esteem projects. And thus non-rivalrous and non-violent. Joyful for the day and simple graces. Doing good work. Not too righteous, holding religion at a distance. But not undisciplined and foolish. A good friend. A good family member. Spending the day doing good. Basically, following the example of the Great Exorcist himself."
