Ondertussen blijkt meercellig leven anderhalf miljard (!) jaar ouder dan tot nu toe gedacht! De fossielen duiden op wezens met een unieke vorm. Waarschijnlijk waren ze niet verwant aan ons, maar is meercelligheid meerdere keren ontstaan. (Dus wellicht ook op Mars en Europa en Titan ... Eh, ja, ik blijf optimistisch.)
Er is weer een interessant prehistorisch roofdier ontdekt, een walvis met enorme tanden, van waarschijnlijk zo'n 17 meter lang (langer dan de reuzenwittehaai Chargarodon megalodon). De naam van deze is ook wel gaaf: Leviathan melvilli.

Afgelopen zaterdag kocht ik in Amsterdam het boek Jesus has left the building van Paul Vieira. Wie weet van mijn recente keuze met betrekking tot kerk, snapt waarschijnlijk al uit de titel waarom dit boek mij relevant lijkt (een recensie volgt t.z.t). Ik vond een bespreking van het boek die een belangrijk punt maakt: "Only God knows what the Church really is- and who it includes. I wouldn't at all be surprised if it turns out that the invisible, real Body of Christ, is both much more, and much less, than what is reflected in its organized, systematic incarnation. The important point being that the rejecting of the organized version of Christianity expressed in the local congregation is not equivalent to the rejection of Christ's church, which is of course, His beloved bride, and the organic expression of which the gates of Hell shall not prevail against."
Verder over de kerk: de Naked Pastor waarschuwt ervoor je af te zetten tegen instituten als zodanig:
"Biblically, institutions are of the created order. They just are, just as we are." Maar: "The problems would start, however, if it becomes forced, contrived, demanded, required, staged, and it no longer is permeated with grace, love and care. Then the natural truth of it dies and only the institutional and organized shell remains." In de discussie voegt hij toe: "The church will be wherever we intentionally gather. The challenge is to prophetically and steadfastly keep it in our service." Goed voor mij om in gedachten te houden.
Mark Galli schrijft na een pijnlijke ervaring over onze weerstand tegen bloed. Maar waarom spreekt Jezus er dan zo vaak over? "We're as uncomfortable with Jesus' blood as with our own. Again, I think that's because we're uncomfortable with his humanity. We like our Jesus to be divine, powerful, the great healer and fixer of problems, one who may have looked like a man with flesh—but not blood, God forbid. But this is the One who thinks blood appropriate dinner conversation ("My blood is true drink," John 6:55), and dips his robe in blood to make a fashion statement (Rev. 19:13). His comfort with blood suggests his comfort with his humanity."
Op de Internetmonkwebsite schrijft Jeff Dunn hoe zogenaamde 'christelijke kunst' voor alle leeftijden, veilig en voorspelbaar is geworden. En dat terwijl we geloven in een creatieve God. Dat betekent echter niet dat de Schepper zich niet meer laat zien door onze creaties. "God has always worked through art and will continue to do so. It’s just that he now shows up in surprising ways. We see the Gospel revealed, not in “Christian” art, but in art made in this age, within the temporal ... God surprises me all the time, popping up and waving at me in movies, books, music, dance, theater, and many other works of arts where I never expected to see him. Now, I expect to see him everywhere." Hij geeft ook voorbeelden.
